About the seminar

The Windscale accident released radionuclides including iodine-131 to atmosphere and led to a local milk distribution ban. The NRPB was involved in assessing the doses and health consequences of the accident. The talk will describe the accident and the assessments conducted by the NRPB and others.


About the speaker

Professor Richard Wakeford, The University of Manchester

Richard Wakeford is currently Professor in Epidemiology in the Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health at The University of Manchester, where he specialises in radiation epidemiology. Richard worked for British Nuclear Fuels Ltd -BNFL- for nearly 30 years, before taking early retirement in 2006 and joining the academic staff of The University of Manchester. While at BNFL, he was involved in a project examining the 1957 Windscale Fire and its effects. He has published and lectured extensively on radiation epidemiology and risk assessment, and is, or has been, a member of a number of UK, EU and international expert groups, including Committee 1 of ICRP, UNSCEAR and COMARE. Richard has been Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Radiological Protection since 1997.
