IR(ME)R Breast Screening workshop recordings

In April 2024 the Medical Exposures Group (UKHSA) collaborated with St. George's National Breast Education Centre, to deliver a virtual workshop to introduce the Guidance for the Implementation of IR(ME)R in Breast Screening. This guidance supports clinical teams to deliver safe clinical practice in compliance with IR(ME)R. A suite of presentations was designed and delivered to demonstrate a practical approach for implementing IR(ME)R within breast imaging services. Recording of the presentations are available below. You may also wish to read the following supporting documentation:

IR(ME)R implications for clinical practice in diagnostic imaging, interventional radiology and diagnostic nuclear medicine"

The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017

This presentation gives a brief introduction into the origins of the safety legislation and regulations regarding the use of ionising radiation. The presentation explores the role of the ICRP, IAEA and Eurotam, as well as Approved Codes of Practice and the differences between the Ionising Radiation Regulations(IRR) and the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R).

MP4 format, 177.3 MB

Here we delve into the roles and responsibilities of the duty holders under IR(ME)R. Within the IR(ME)R safety framework the role of training, entitlement and scope of practice are also looked at in depth.

The first of two presentations focusing on the practical implementation of IR(ME)R in the breast imaging pathway. This presentation focuses on different aspects of IR(ME)R such as referral, justification, patient identification, pregnancy and breastfeeding enquiries and optimisation.

The second of two presentations on the practical implementation of IR(ME)R in the breast screening pathway. Here we explore additional components of IR(ME)R such as clinical evaluation, benefit and risk communications, carers and comforters, audit and equipment. This presentation also highlights key guidance documents that may be beneficial to mammography imaging services.

This presentation aims to support understanding of notifiable accidental or unintended exposures, significant and clinically significant accidental or unintended exposures. A quick introduction into the National incident learning system in clinical imaging, MRI and nuclear medicine is also covered in this presentation.
