This five-day professional level course provides a thorough introduction to the theory and practice of ionising radiation protection. The course is designed for those whose work brings them into contact with radiation protection issues and who therefore need to understand the subject, but who are not intending to become radiation protection specialists.
It will introduce the student to the different types of radioactive decay and the physical and biological properties of ionising radiation, the methods of controlling the exposure of individuals to radiation and the legislation associated with radiation protection.
Issues connected with radon exposure, waste management, low specific activity materials, radiation emergencies and radiation measurement will also be covered. The course concludes with perspectives on radiation protection within general industry, the medical sector and the nuclear industry. No prior knowledge of radiation protection or associated legislation is assumed.
The course will be delivered primarily through lectures as far as possible in a qualitative way, although some topics will require the use of basic mathematics. Practical exercises and onsite facilities visits are included. Students completing this module receive course certificates. No formal written examination is required.
We also offer full training courses for those interested in becoming Radiation Protection Supervisors or who undertake other roles.
