Milagrosa López Riego has been a member of the Cancer Mechanisms and Biomarkers Group (Radiation Effects Department, UKHSA) since November 2023, after completing her PhD studies on biomarkers of ionizing radiation (IR) relevant to carcinogenesis at Stockholm University (Sweden). During her PhD studies, Milagrosa developed a strong interest in radiation protection. She has participated in research projects looking into dose, dose rate and LET dependencies of IR-induced cellular effects, as well as interindividual variation of the response of IR exposure markers. She has been involved in the last RENEB European exercise on the gene expression assay applied to biological dosimetry.
Milagrosa is currently expanding her expertise as a radiation protection scientist, being interested in the influence of circadian rhythm on IR-induced responses, with implications from biological dosimetry to radiation protection, the development of new biological systems with applications to biological dosimetry, and the investigation of the molecular mechanisms underlying radiation-induced acute myeloid leukaemia.
